The United States Grand Prix: Austin Post-Qualifying Tips

Formula 1 Tips For The United States Grand Prix

Every Grand Prix weekend I give myself 100 points and place a few hypothetical bets using the odds available from SkyBet.com and see how I do.  In general I always like to wait until after qualifying before placing my bets, so to test whether that's the best strategy or not, I place a selection of tips before and after qualifying and see which set of tips do best.

You can find my pre-qualifying tips here:
The United States Grand Prix: Austin Pre-Qualifying Tips

And here are my post-qualifying tips...

To Finish On The Podium:
10 points on Fernando Alonso at 3.5
If Vettel wins the race then Alonso needs to finish at least 4th to take the championship battle to the final round of the season in Brazil next week, so you can guarantee that Fernando will be giving it his all to make up as many places as possible.  Alonso had a disappointing qualifying session but that's been the story of his last few Grand Prix weekends and it hasn't stopped him from making the podium in 5 of the last 6 races.  One of Fernando's strengths is that he consistently makes up places during the race, so even starting from 8th on the grid he can't be written off.

Top Six Finish:
15 points on Kimi Raikkonen at odds of 1.33
Kimi has been the model of consistency in this market, notching 11 top six finishes from the last 12 Grand Prix.  On the back of his brilliant drive at Abu Dhabi I'm therefore going to go for a cagey bet on Kimi Raikkonen to record yet another top six finish.

To Finish In The Points (Top Ten Finish):
10 points on Bruno Senna at 2.25
Senna has 9 top ten finishes so far this season and tends to make up places during the race, so starting from 11th he looks a reasonable bet to sneak into the lower end of the points scoring positions.

Safety Car:
10 points on Safety Car - Yes at 1.73
Several drivers are predicting potential problems at the first corner and you also have to consider that the slippy nature of this new track could likewise increase the potential for accidents.  A safety car therefore looks a distinct possibility.

Lap 1 Retirements:
5 points on Exactly 3 at 19.00
This is a tricky market to predict but given that several drivers are predicting a possible first corner incident, the odds of 19.0 on Exactly 3 Lap 1 Retirements therefore make this bet seem worth a small punt.

Total Classified Finishers:
10 points on Under 19.5 Finishers at 1.83
This is a market I usually stay away from, but again the the fact that this is a new track with little grip, could lead to more incidents than usual and therefore I'm tempted by a small bet on Under 19.5 Finishers.

Not To Be Classified:
10 points on Nico Rosberg at 5.0
Nico Rosberg has suffered 3 retirements in the last 4 Grand Prix and seems to attract collisions at the moment.  Added to this is the fact that he qualified 17th, so if he wants to make his way up into the points then he'll have to attempt a lot of overtaking on a track which the drivers report is very slippy once you get off the racing line.  Odds of 5.0 for Rosberg not to be classified therefore seem worth a small bet.

* N.B. If a driver retires within five laps of the finish they would still be classified.

Finally, I'll round things off with a few match bets...
Kovalainen V Petrov:
10 points on Heikki Kovalainen at 1.91

Ricciardo V Vergne:
10 points on Daniel Ricciardo at 2.0

Maldonado V Senna:
10 points on Bruno Senna at 2.25

As already mentioned, I also placed a few hypothetical points bets before qualifying so I'll report back after the race and see how the two sets of bets compare.
